Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes @ Sadler’s Wells
January 12, 2020
With our previous two trips to Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella in Jan 2018 and Swan Lake this year having proved popular, in addition to our sold-out summer trip to his new production of Romeo & Juliet, I thought a return visit in the New Year may once again be of interest.
Brought to us at Sadler’s Wells by the same New Adventures team, The Red Shoes was a sell-out for its world premiere in 2016.
Following the success of our Sunday outings we are sticking to the same format this time round – giving us the bonus of not rushing for the coach after work (for those that do) or dealing with the rush hour traffic. You will notice below that it is a 2nd price seat that is included. This is only because they don’t discount the top price seats. They are very good seats however, positioned immediately behind the top price section.
Based on the film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, Matthew Bourne’s triumphant adaptation is set to the achingly romantic music of golden-age Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann. Orchestrated by Terry Davies and played live by the New Adventures Orchestra, with cinematic designs by Lez Brotherston, lighting by Paule Constable and sound by Paul Groothuis, Bourne’s hugely popular interpretation returns to London, having won two Olivier Awards and dazzled audiences across the UK and the USA.
The Red Shoes is a tale of obsession, possession and one girl’s dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. Victoria Page lives to dance but her ambitions become a battleground between the two men who inspire her passion.
The Red Shoes is – “A feast for the eye. The Red Shoes will be dancing for years to come” THE OBSERVER, “Enthralling. Richly satisfying” THE GUARDIAN, “Shoes that fit beautifully. Blissful” DAILY TELEGRAPH.
