Knebworth House, Park & Gardens

July 23, 2021

Having visited many of our nation’s great stately homes over the years, Knebworth House seemed the ideal addition to our previous tours. Famous to many as the home to some of the greatest rock and pop concerts of the past 40 years, the history of Kenbowrth House goes back much much further.

Set in 250 acres of beautiful rolling Hertfordshire countryside with 28 acres of formal garden, Knebworth House has been home to the Lytton family for over 19 generations, making for an extraordinary walk through 500 years of local and British history.

Inside, stories and heirlooms reflect the family’s contribution to literature, politics and Foreign Service, alongside visits by characters as diverse as Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth I. Popular rooms include the Jacobean Banqueting Hall, Victorian Library and Edwardian Dining Parlour.

With tea and coffee on arrival included, what better way to start a day of discovery. Our guided tour of the house follows where we will learn about Knebworth House and the Lytton Family for whom it has been home for over 500 years. Following the tour the rest of the afternoon is ours to spend as we please. Lunch could be found in the tea rooms and then there is the British Raj Exhibition. Highlighting the family’s history with India, the exhibition was put together to mark the centenary of the Great Delhi Durbar of 1877 when Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India by her Viceroy, Robert 1st Earl of Lytton.

In addition there is of course the obligatory gift shop and a beautiful selection of gardens just waiting to be explored. As well as the 28 acres of formal gardens the grounds include ponds, a walled vegetable garden, a formal rose garden, Gertrude Jekyll’s herb garden and colourful borders. Leaving at approx. 4pm we should find ourselves back in Dorking at about 5.45pm.
