Dinner and Theatre The Mill at Sonning
October 27, 2022
With much of the original structure retained, this 18th Century Flour Mill has been converted into a renowned Dinner Theatre. Patrons enjoy a fresh home-cooked meal – with not a microwave in sight! – before watching the performance in the 215 seat air-conditioned auditorium. Pre-dinner drinks with a view of The Thames or watching the working Waterwheel in the bar, is an added treat.
On the way home one night Henry Perkins, a mild-mannered accountant, picks up the wrong briefcase on the Tube. Inside the briefcase Henry finds, in the place of his usual cheese & pickle sandwich, £1.5million in used notes!
So naturally he decides to flit to sunny Spain with his wife and best friends Vic & Betty. Bliss! But then, enter two coppers. One to arrest him for erratic behaviour in the local pub. The other to ask him to identify the corpse of a murdered man……also called Henry Perkins! Calamity! What ensues is a spiralling confusion of fibs, false names and frantic deceptions.
Having been a great supporter of the Mill at Sonning for many years, Ray Cooney stepped in even more in the early days of the pandemic. The theatre were so grateful for his support and involvement that in the Autumn of last year they named the auditorium in his honour. It seems fitting then that we get the chance to visit in October to see one of his most successful plays Funny Money. Having had a very successful two year run in the West End, Funny Money was subsequently made into a film in 2006 starring Chevy Chase.
Having previously won ‘UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre’, we are assured our usual first-class experience enjoying a home-cooked 2 course meal before the show followed by tea or coffee.
