The beautiful city of Bruges is just over an hour from Calais by coach and makes a marvellous destination for a relaxed weekend away.
Arguably the best-preserved mediaeval city in Northern Europe, Bruges boasts a surprisingly large historic heart, with stunning architecture, picturesque canals, great restaurants, stylish cafes and friendly bars.
Your hotel – The 4* De Medici
The 4* Hotel de Medici is excellently located in the centre of Bruges. This means that all the city’s main sights are within easy walking distance. As you would expect, all rooms offer a high level of comfort with private bath-rooms, colour tv and telephone. The De Medici also has its own bar. Breakfast is a continental style buffet.
The Itinerary
Friday – After leaving Dorking at 07.30, and catching the ferry from Dover, the group arrive in Bruges by mid-afternoon. After checking-in at the hotel the rest of the day is completely free and, as you no doubt know, Bruges offers a wonderful choice of restaurants, cafes & bars.
Saturday – Today your time is completely free in beautiful Bruges, and we would add that any effort to explore beyond the traditional tourist routes will be well rewarded.
Sunday – Remembering how much everyone enjoyed the Palace of Versailles when in Paris, the programme today features a visit to the Chateau de Beloeil, the ancestral home of the Princes of Ligne, widely regarded as the Belgian Versailles. While it is not quite as spectacular as Versailles, it is a lot less crowded, and its gardens a delight.
Monday – Keeping things very relaxed, the group leaves Bruges after a leisurely breakfast and drives to the popular resort town of Ostend. Ostend boasts a wonderful sandy beach and a great range and choice of restaurants and cafes (and it’s not a bank holiday in Belgium). From here the coach will return to Calais and the anticipated time of arrival back in Dorking is 19.00.
