The Valley Gardens & Royal Heritage Tour of the Great Park, Windsor

May 7, 2024

Having had such a successful visit to The Savill Garden in 2023, in 2024 we return, but this time for a guided walking tour of the Valley Gardens and a Royal Heritage tour of the Great Park by coach.

Upon arrival at the Savill Garden Visitor Centre there will be time to use the facilities and peruse the shop as we enjoy tea/coffee and biscuits. Once complete we will take a coach transfer with a guide to the wonderful Valley Gardens.

First established in the 1940s, and with the blessing of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, Deputy Ranger Eric Savill and his Head Gardener, later to become Keeper of the Gardens, Hope Findlay, turned to the undulating valleys which lie on the northern shores of Virginia Water to house azaleas, magnolias and exotic blooms from all over the world … including National Collections of magnolia, rhododendron, Glenn Dale azaleas, as well as Himalayan and Chinese birches. Covering 101 hectares (250 acres) this woodland of twisting trails and seasonal flowers is known collectively as the Valley Gardens. We have chosen the date of our visit to see the Gardens at their seasonal best.

After our guided tour, we will return to the visitor centre where there will be some free time. The Visitor Centre comprises of a gift shop and plant centre as well as The Gallery Café and The Savill Garden Kitchen where we could take lunch if we wish.

The afternoon sees us re-board the coach as we are taken on a guided Royal Heritage Tour of the Great Park. Exclusively available to groups, this is a rare opportunity to be fully immersed in 1000 years of Royal History with a personally guided coach tour of Windsor Great Park. If you have always wanted to explore the Great Park but have never known where to start, or wanted to do all those steps, the unique national and natural heritage of Windsor Great Park can be enjoyed on this 90-minute private tour.

Following the conclusion of our lovely day out, we will re-board the coach with a view to arriving back at the Dorking Halls at approximately 6/6.15pm.
