Wey & Arun Canal Cruise with lunch @ The Sir Roger Tichborne, Billingshurst

May 9, 2024

Following a very popular river cruise on the Wey and Arun Canal as one of our first trips after the pandemic, and, as we had such a waiting list at the time, I am pleased to offer a similar trip in the Spring of 2024. The Wey and Arun Junction Canal was built to provide a navigable waterway all the way up to Stonebridge Wharf of the Wey Navigation at Shalford near Guildford effectively linking those local canals to the south coast and dramatically boosting trade for local industry. The advent of the railways however was to quickly make transport considerably faster and more convenient, sounding the eventual commercial death knell for the canals. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of a very large army of volunteers and enthusiasts, who are part of what is now known as the Wey & Arun Canal Trust, we are once again able to enjoy the idyllic Loxwood section which is recognised as a national heritage asset as well as providing a haven for wildlife.

On arrival we will take to the boat and during our 2 1/2-hour boat ride we will enjoy tea and coffee. Once our return journey is complete, having successfully navigated a lock or two, we will stop for lunch.

Just a short 3-minute drive down the road will see us lunch at The Sir Roger Tichborne. Established in 1873 this idyllic, independent, family run countryside pub has recently been refurbished and is well stocked with fine wines and local ales. With a relaxed, friendly, and informal feel we will find locally sourced fresh produce, cooked daily. Situated in Alfold Bars overlooking the open fields of northwest Sussex – no matter the English weather it’s the perfect spot for sitting out in the stunning garden or making for a quick, cosy fireside retreat. Not that hopefully we’ll need the fireside on our visit! We will enjoy a pre-ordered one course lunch for which choices will be sent out prior to our trip. You can of course top up your lunch as you see fit with either more courses and/or drinks to suit your own taste and budget.

Having enjoyed the cruise and lunch, we will depart at around 3.30pm, expecting to be back in Dorking at about 4.30pm.
