By Royal Appointment
Coach pick up, time to spend in Chichester, matinee performance and return coach.
The late Queen Elizabeth II was famous for her discretion. She never said anything in public that could ruffle the lightest of feathers. But she had one way of expressing what she really thought – through her wardrobe.
By Royal Appointment is a funny, poignant and celebratory new play about the kind of power that only a Queen can wield – she charms the world through coats and admonishes her family through a carefully chosen hat.
But the Queen herself is uninterested in fashion; her look is managed by her Designer, her Milliner and most powerful of all, her Dresser: a working-class girl who goes from advising the Queen on the colour of her lipsticks to the real power behind the throne. But The Dresser, like all royal favourites, is living on borrowed time.
By Royal Appointment is a behind-the-scenes peek into the world of our most popular monarch and the image she presented to the world. Starring much-loved Jane Asher as The Queen, Samantha Womack as The Dresser, Downton Abbey star David Robb as The Designer with Matthew Cottle as The Milliner and Laura Matthews as The Curator, this smash hit play is written by Daisy Goodwin who created the hit ITV series Victoria.
With both our Chichester summer trip and our trip to Her Life In Style, the exhibition of the Queen’s clothes in London proving so popular, I thought this might be a great opportunity to combine both interests!
As with our summer visits to Chichester, we include a few hours of free time before the show starts, giving us the opportunity to enjoy the pedestrianised shopping streets, the Cathedral or time to just sit down and relax with a drink and a bite to eat. Being a matinee performance, we anticipate arrival back in Dorking to be at about 6.30/7pm.
For around 20 years now, our annual summer visit to Chichester has sold out. This year was no different resulting in three coaches. It is unlikely I will be able to get tickets for more than one visit this time however, so to be sure of your place, do book early to avoid missing out.
