Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man @ Sadler’s Wells

Our New Year visits to Sadler’s Wells for the now annual Matthew Bourne production, always prove incredibly popular, and have given us the opportunity to enjoy Cinderella, Nutcracker!, Sleeping Beauty, Edward Scissorhands, Swan Lake and most recently The Red Shoes. Summer productions have been a little more sparse, but having enjoyed Romeo & Juliet a few years ago, we can now return on a warmer summer evening, this time to witness the highly-acclaimed The Car Man.

Loosely based on Georges Bizet’s opera, Carmen, The Car Man presents a 19th century Spanish cigarette factory which becomes a greasy 1950’s garage-diner in the American Mid-West where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome and enigmatic stranger.

Fueled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.

The dance thriller is directed and choreographed by Matthew Bourne with music by Terry Davies & Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite. It features an iconic score and celebrated choreography.

Matthew Bourne said: “I never dreamed when we created this show at the beginning of the new millennium that it would still be around, thrilling audiences, 25 years later! Inspired by vintage movie film noir classics, it holds a unique and special place in the New Adventures repertory as the only piece based on an opera. I’m particularly happy that we are taking the show “on the road” again after more than 10 years and I can’t wait to re-visit the hot and steamy town of Harmony USA – the best place to be next summer!”

You will notice below that it is a 2^nd price seat that is included. This is because they don’t discount any of the other seats. We have our usual allocation in the stalls, directly behind the top price seats, which has served us very well on all our previous visits. With the continued popularity and success of our trips to Sadler’s Wells for the Matthew Bourne productions, and with this being a strictly limited season, it is advisable to book early with most previous years ending with a waiting list.
