Guys and Dolls
March 14, 2024
I have, on occasion, been asked if I would consider running a matinee theatre trip. With the opportunity to have lunch or visit other things in the London Bridge area, I thought Guys & Dolls at The Bridge Theatre would be a good place to start.
With more hit songs, more laughs and more romance than any show ever written, The Bridge Theatre transforms for one of the greatest musicals of all time. The seating is wrapped around the action where we will be transported to the streets of Manhattan and the bars of Havana in the unlikeliest of love stories.
New to London in 2017 The Bridge Theatre is fast establishing itself as a powerhouse on the London theatrical scene. The 900-seat auditorium is designed to be flexible and can be adapted for a variety of performance styles. Taking its name from its location, right by Tower Bridge, The Bridge Theatre is run by London Theatre Company which was founded by Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr in 2017.
The cream of gambling’s high society are gathering in New York City for Nathan Detroit’s popular dice game. All the hotshot guys are here: Harry the Horse, Liver Lips Louie, Rusty Charlie and Big Jule from Chicago. Nathan could make a fortune. Except he’s stony-broke and can’t afford the $1,000 needed for a deposit on a room for the game. The only hope is to lay a bet he absolutely can’t lose. Enter the iciest doll he knows, missionary zealot Sarah Brown from the Save-A-Soul Mission, and notorious player Sky Masterson, a gambler who can’t turn down a challenge. Even when the wager requires he woo pious Sarah all the way to Havana.
This multi award-winning musical opened in 1950, winning five Tony Awards including Best Musical. It includes the hit numbers Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat, Luck Be A Lady and My Time of Day and inspired the award-winning 1955 movie which starred Marlon Brando as Sky Masterson and Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit.
Enjoy a relaxing trip by just finding somewhere for lunch yourself and seeing the matinee performance of Guys & Dolls or add in the option of lunch at The Ivy, Tower Bridge, visit The View from the Shard or see Direct from Graceland – The Elvis Exhibition. Borough Market and Southwark Cathedral are just a short walk away as is HMS Belfast and the Hays Galleria. Make the day as bespoke as you wish.
